Dr. Alex Manuel Perez-Barry, Assistant Professor of English

Dr. Perez-Barry teaches composition, literature, and creative writing courses based out of the South Lake Campus.  He started his career in 1993, teaching English in Palm Beach, Miami-Dade, and Monroe County Public Schools. He has also taught at Miami-Dade College, Florida Keys Community College, and the University of Phoenix. In addition to his work in the classroom, Dr. Perez-Barry has served LSSC in a variety of leadership roles, including Program Manager for the QEP and English and Communications Department Chair.

Since joining the LSSC Faculty in 2007, Dr. Perez-Barry's work has been recognized for excellence by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching,  the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development, the Association of Florida Colleges, the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce, and he has garnered nominations from his LSSC colleagues for the Association of Florida Colleges Professor of the Year Competitions.
 
Dr. Perez-Barry completed his bachelor's degree in English at the University of Vermont, where he was a recipient of the distinguished Buckham Overseas Scholarship, enabling him to spend junior year studying the life and literature of Charles Dickens at the University of Kent at Canterbury England.  Dr. Perez completed his master’s degree in English at Teachers College Columbia University​His doctoral research at the University of Phoenix School of Advanced Studies was a mixed methods study using a narrative inquiry design to examine educator mentorship, satisfaction, and retention. Dr. Perez-Barry recently completed an eLearning certificate in leadership and the future of education through the Harvard University College of Education​. Dr. Perez-Barry is currently an MFA student of writing nonfiction at the Savannah College of Art and Design​.

In addition to being a dedicated educator of English for over 25 years, Dr. Perez-Barry's passions include learning about his Cuban-Chinese heritage, writing creative nonfiction, reading memoirs, and travel. He has explored twelve countries, three continents, and more than twenty global capital cities. Dr. Perez-Barry is currently writing a memoir honoring his father's rich cultural heritage and the struggles of achieving success as a Cuban exile of Chinese slaves living in the United States. Dr. Perez-Barry is planning his first
 visit to Cuba and China as he works on writing his memoir
