Welcome to my home page! My name is Kevin Arms and I am a faculty librarian at Lake-Sumter State College in the Leesburg campus library. When I am not working as the Access Services Librarian and College Archivist, I'm an instructor for SLS1501 - Foundations of Student Success Seminar. In addition to my work as a teacher, I am also the faculty advisor to the college's literary and art magazine, The Odyssey, and a co-advisor to the Theatre Arts Society of Lake-Sumter State College.
I received my Master of Library and Information Science degree in 2014 from the University of South Florida, and my Bachelor of Arts degree, summa cum laude, in Anthropology in 2012, also from USF. My professional research interests include cultural anthropology, anthropological linguistics, local history, museum informatics, and library user experience. I am particularly interested in how people use technology to get information and how they organize their information for retrieval.
I approach my classes with the idea of exploring the whole college experience beyond just goal setting, note taking, test taking and feedback. Issues such as diversity, wellness, and writing frequently come into play, and I am known for challenging student viewpoints in class. I enjoy robust discussions during my classes, and will often ask open-ended questions to garner a response or to provoke discussion. I cover a wide variety of topics in my class and relate them to real life experiences as a college student so that students may take away more than just note-taking or test taking strategies, but rather an understanding of what it means to be a student in the 21st century.
My office hours are by appointment and in my office on days that the class meets in person. You will find my office in the Leesburg library. I encourage students to reach out to me by email if you have questions or concerns:
