Solving for Success at the 38th Annual Mathlympics

Last Friday, Lake-Sumter State College (LSSC) welcomed bright and eager math minds from across Lake and Sumter Counties for the highly anticipated 38th Annual Mathlympics competition. This annual showdown brought together 27 teams from 13 local high schools to compete in a rigorous mathematics challenge.

Each team faced 40 complex questions up to pre-calculus and trigonometry, with only 60 minutes on the clock. In addition to scoring points for accuracy, teams were awarded bonus points for being the first to correctly answer each question, adding speed and strategy to the mix.

“Strong math skills are an important foundation to college courses in a wide variety of disciplines,” said Megan Cavanah, LSSC dean of math. “It’s exciting and invigorating to see these high school students get excited about mathematics. In addition, the math faculty did an outstanding job hosting the event. Their passion for this event is evident in every aspect, from crafting challenging and engaging problems to ensuring a smooth competition day.”

LSSC’s math faculty take pride in developing the question set each year, carefully crafting a mix of problems that challenge students’ critical thinking, accuracy, and mathematical reasoning. The questions are designed not just to test textbook knowledge, but to spark curiosity and creative problem solving. This thoughtful preparation is part of what makes the Mathlympics such a unique and respected event.

After a fast-paced and intellectually demanding competition, Montverde Academy (Team A) emerged as the overall champion, securing one of the coveted Mathlympics trophies.

This year’s Mathlympics added a playful twist with a Minecraft-themed atmosphere. Students were encouraged to dress up, accessorize, and embrace the pixelated world of Minecraft while competing, adding an extra layer of fun and creativity to the event.

“Lake-Sumter State College is proud to partner with high school teachers across our two counties who share our passion for learning,” said Karen Hogans, Vice President of Academic Affairs. “Events like Mathlympics help students see that learning can be challenging, collaborative, and fun. Together with our K–12 partners, we’re building a strong academic foundation that prepares students for college and the workforce.”
